The Fairbanks North Star Borough is a growing center for research and technology. The University of Alaska Fairbanks plays a principal role in both areas through its commitment to research as an educational institution and through its many partnerships with public and private sector organizations.
Research Programs
Some of these programs include, the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, Poker Flat Research Range, and the Office of Miniaturization. The Office of Miniaturization is partnering with other universities and with industry to develop next generation nanosensors and affordable microsensor arrays using advanced nanoelectronic packaging.
Satellite Tracking
Currently, there are nine satellite ground stations operating in the Fairbanks area. Another natural advantage Fairbanks has is greater visibility of polar orbiting satellites. A satellite may be seen up to 12 times a day from a Fairbanks ground station allowing for more frequent data downloads and house keeping tasks. This all occurs in an environment that provides support, supply services and amenities superior to most other sites with similar capabilities. For more information, click here.
